Lisbon, the practical bits
Lisbon is built on hills, served by a compact metro, yellow trams, buses and river ferries, and one card works on all of them.
From the airport
Metro. Red line from Aeroporto station (open 06:30 to 01:00). About 16 minutes to Saldanha; change at Alameda (green line) for the Baixa, or at São Sebastião (blue line) for Avenida da Liberdade. Source: Metro de Lisboa · checked 6 Nov 2026
Taxi. Since 15 October 2026, taxis from the airport rank charge fixed fares by zone, luggage included. By day (07:00 to 22:00) €16 for zone 1 and €19 for zone 2, which covers the Baixa, Belém and Estrela. Night fares are higher, and reports of them differ, so ask before you set off. Aerobus. The Aerobus shuttle no longer runs. Ignore older guides that recommend it.

The lifts are closed
Lisbon's historic lifts are mostly shut. The Glória funicular has been closed since the accident of 3 September 2025 (a replacement is planned for 2029). Bica, Lavra and the Santa Justa lift also closed in September 2025 with no reopening date. Only the Graça funicular runs.

Tram 28 fills with visitors from mid-morning, and pickpockets work the crowded trams, so ride early and keep your bag in front of you. Its route was shortened in November 2025; check Carris before planning a day around it. A ticket bought on board costs more than a card fare.
Sintra and Cascais by train
Lisbon suburban trains (Sintra, Cascais, Azambuja and Sado lines) charge by zone: €1.50 for one zone, up to €3.90 for eight, plus €0.50 for the card. The 24-hour Metro + Carris + CP ticket (€11.40) covers Sintra and Cascais.

Ferries from Cais do Sodré cross to Cacilhas in about ten minutes, with a view of the city from the river. The 24-hour pass with Transtejo covers this crossing.
