No tax, as far as we can tell: Lagos (Guides that list €2 are confusing it with Lagoa), Tavira, Silves, Porto Moniz (The only Madeira municipality not charging). Rate unclear: Cascais. Cascais has charged since 2017, but published rates conflict (€1 to €4). Ask your accommodation. Also reported as charging, not yet verified by us: Nazaré, Peniche, Viana do Castelo, Póvoa de Varzim, Figueira da Foz, Maia, Loures, Almada, Sesimbra and Tomar.
Good to know
Who pays the tourist tax in Portugal?
Guests staying in hotels, guesthouses and holiday lets in a municipality that charges it, usually from age 13 or 16 depending on the town. It is paid per person per night, up to a maximum number of nights.
Is the tourist tax included in my booking?
Often not. Many booking sites show it as "not included" and the accommodation collects it on arrival or checkout, sometimes in cash.
Is there a national or regional tourist tax?
No. Each municipality decides, so two towns a few kilometres apart can charge differently. Madeira and the Azores have no regional tax either.
